BHS Orchesis Wins Viewers Choice Award

BHS Orchesis' dance group video submission is the VIEWERS' CHOICE AWARD WINNER for the Ovation One Dance. One Chance. Competition!  As the Viewers' Choice Winner, BHS Orchesis will receive a $1,000 cash grant for the school.

There were over 108 entries, 23 semi-finalists and close to 110,000 viewer votes.  The competition, which was launched last August, invited US dance groups, classes, 
ensembles, troupes and crews with students ages 13 and up to submit video of their recent dance performances for a chance to win a scholarship and national television 
exposure.

Winter Jazz Festival -- Wednesday, February 1st

The Barrington High School jazz department will present the Winter Jazz Festival on
Wednesday, February 1st, 2012
7:30 pm
Richard C. Johnson Auditorium at Barrington High School.
 
The concert will feature the Barrington High School Jazz Ensemble jazz band, the BHS Rithum Machine jazz band, and the Rithum Machine combo directed by Randy Karon and Jonathan Tompary.
The Prairie middle school jazz band is directed by Luana Byte, and the Station middle school jazz band is directed by Charles Byte.
 
Music to be performed on the program includes:
"Take the 'A' Train," by Billy Strayhorn,
"Afro Blue" arranged by Michael Philip Mossman,
"So What" by Miles Davis,
"Fun Time" and "A Little Happiness" by Sammy Nestico,
"Santa Fe Bandolero" by George Shutack,
and many other well-known original and standard jazz pieces by the jazz big bands and combo.
 
The finale of the concert will feature the Prairie and Station 8th grade jazz musicians performing with the BHS "Rithum Machine" jazz band.
 
This festival concert is the kickoff concert for the BHS jazz bands jazz festival/competition season. The BHS jazz bands and combos will appear at the New Trier jazz festival, the Evanston jazz festival, Jazz In The Meadows (at Rolling Meadows high school) and the ECC Jazz Festival at Elgin Community College.
 
The concert is free to the public and promises to be a great program of contemporary and classic big band jazz performances.

Holiday Choir Concerts --- 14 and 15-December

The Barrington High School Fine Arts Department Presents
 
Holiday Choir Concerts
Wednesday, December 14th & Thursday, December 15th
At 7:30 PM
 
The award winning Barrington High School Choirs will perform on Wednesday, December 14th and Thursday, December 15th at 7:30 pm in the Richard C. Johnson Auditorium.  The shows will feature sacred and secular songs of the season.
 
All seats are reserved. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students/children and senior citizens are admitted for free.  Tickets will be available to the public beginning Friday, December 9th.

The Barrington High School Orchestras will present their holiday concert on Thursday, December 8th at 7:30 pm in the Richard C. Johnson Auditorium at BHS.  
Under the direction of Clark Sheldon, the Orchestras will perform many seasonal classics.  
 
Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for children/students and seniors are admitted for free.

The Barrington High school Concert and Symphonic bands will present their "Winter Holiday" band concert on Tuesday, December 6th at 7:30PM in the BHS auditorium.
The concert will feature an outstanding mix of original band music and a number of holiday favorites.

BHS Technical Services Crew & Apprentice Members

Barrington High School Fine Arts Department announces
BHS Technical Services Crew & Apprentice Members

The Barrington High School Fine Arts Department has an established crew of student technicians who will train throughout the year in production areas of sound, lighting and stage management. These very skilled student technicians will assist the BHS Technical Director with rental and/or district productions. In addition to technical theater training, students will be groomed in the areas of leadership and decision making. 
 
Technical Service crew members possess technical theater expertise, exhibit a high level of responsibility and exhibit good communication skills. A limited number of paid technicians were selected as well as several unpaid apprentices.
 
Technical Services Crew members this year are Lydia Church (Barrington), Morgan Hunter (Barrington), Caroline Kline (Barrington), Stephen Martino (Hoffman Estates), Robert Leese (Lake Barrington), Fiona Malone (Barrington), Katie McGranahan (Barrington), Jessica Olson (Lake Barrington),. Technical Services Crew apprentices are Amy Fish (Barrington), Eric Haufschild (Barrington), Adam Hay (Tower Lakes), Alex Miller-Knack (Barrington), Jake Morris (South Barrington), and Casey Popp (Barrington Hills).
 
The Techinical Services Crew staff advisor is BHS Technical Director Amy Jessup.

2011 Lesson Scholarships Available

The Fine Arts Boosters are offering $100 lesson scholarship supplements to students who would benefit from studying privately.  BHS Students currently and/or intending to study with a private teacher, at a private studio, or take a class in performing or visual art are eligible.  Students must currently be enrolled in a BHS fine art class.
 
Application forms are available from teachers in Fine Arts classes or from the Fine Arts Office.  The deadline for submitting the application and teacher recommendation is Monday, September 19, 2011.

BHS Viola Soloist Honored with Appearance on NPR's "From The Top"

Broadcast on over 200 stations nationwide to an audience of more than 700,000 listeners each week, From the Top is one of the most popular classical music programs on radio.  Each one-hour broadcast presents five performances along with interviews and sketches, revealing the heart and soul behind extraordinary young musicians. Now in its twelfth year on air, this From the Top was taped before a live audience in the Arie Crown Theater in McCormick Place.
 
The show opened with violist Stephanie Block from Barrington performing the first movement of the Walton Viola Concerto.

The Clair E. Smith Art Gallery in Barrington High School is currently displaying the paintings of BHS Alumnus Hannah Altshuler through September 24th.
